TIRZ Naming StandardChapter 311

All taxing units that create a new TIRZ are required to provide the name of the TIRZ used in the order or ordinance. The TIRZ name must meet the Comptroller’s naming standards.

  1. A TIRZ can include one of these in the name:
    • lead taxing unit;
    • subdivision encompassed in the zone; or
    • prominent business within the zone.
  2. A TIRZ name must include “Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone” or “TIRZ” as a part of the name to distinguish it from other types of zones.
  3. If the lead taxing unit has multiple TIRZs, the next element to include is a zone number, such as “Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone #1” and “Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone #2” or “TIRZ #24” and “TIRZ #25.” Order/Ordinance numbers or dates should not be included in the name of the zone.

Here are some examples of properly named reinvestment zones:

  • Dallas Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone #1.
  • Reunion District Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone #1 and Reunion District Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone #2.
  • Verizon Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone.
  • Granbury TIRZ #23.
  • Cooke County Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone. (A number is not required if the zone is the only one created by the lead taxing unit.)
